1) I strenuously object to the use of the term "liberal", particularly in this context. There is nothing pro-freedom, pro-democracy, or tolerant about unionized academics. This group is "progressive", anti-status-quo, and Democratic (except when it comes to their own profession on concepts such as tenure).
2) Only looking at data post 1974 will necessarily include a progressive bias from the anti-draft community with found shelter within academics. A modern study should consider pre-WWI, and international data from countries that either have no draft, or have no academic exemption from the draft.
But, a praise the work for acknowledging the power of the progressive reputation of academics, which is well deserved.
